The Journey to Dr. Dr. Aloba: Bridging Neuroscience and Clinical Research

On March 17, 2026, I defended my Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Emory University— and I am still taking it all in!

It has been an incredible journey, shaped by faith and sacrifice, and I am deeply grateful to God for ordering every step.

My doctoral research used transcranial magnetic stimulation to examine the neural mechanisms of prism adaptation therapy across the lifespan — from healthy aging to post-stroke spatial neglect. This work was made possible by the generosity of The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) through an NINDS T32 Institutional Training Grant, an F31 Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA), and an NIH-NINDS Loan Repayment Award.

My incredible Ph.D. experience is largely due to my extraordinary mentor, Trisha Kesar, PT, PhD, whose investment in my well-rounded, rigorous training has shaped me into the clinician-scientist I am today. Thank you, Trisha!

Amongst others, one of the deepest honors was investing in the next generation of scientists through the Emory University School of Medicine-Emory Pipeline Collaborative (EPiC) program, first as a neuroscience instructor teaching neuroanatomy and neuroscience curriculum, then as Vice President of Mentorship, where I helped build a mentorship infrastructure and launched our annual Lab Tour Day, bringing high school students into Emory research labs to experience science firsthand, and finally as Summer Program Lead Mentor. A special thank you to Allen Lee for the opportunity to be part of the EPiC program for the last four years.

I would also like to thank my amazing husband Oluwaseun Aloba. MBBS, MPH, CIC, my family, and my siblings who have supported me every step of the way.

To everyone who prayed for me, believed in me, walked alongside me, or simply asked “how’s the dissertation going?” — this milestone belongs to all of us.

The journey continues. The best science is still ahead!!!
